Anyone who uses macOS or iOS knows what a blessing AirDrop is. The feature makes file transfer a breeze, allowing you to pick up any file on one Apple device and drop it on another in no time.
However, this option is only available on Apple products and does not work when it comes to cross-platform transfers. Many people have used other options to accomplish that, and ShareIt has become one of the most popular. An app that allows cross-platform transfer with minimal hassle (although it has ads), acting as a good substitute to AirDrop for files that need to transferr from one platform to another.

But what if we told you that there is a file-sharing platform that has been around for almost five years and that allows you to share files from one device to another regardless of the platform. Instead of installing ShareIt on both your devices, giving yourself a name, and making sure they have the app, this one doesn’t require you to do anything.
Just make sure both devices connect with the same Internet service! Snapdrop.net is a free, open-source, cross-platform web app for sharing files across devices, regardless of their platform. The App works on iOS, Android, Windows, Linux, and any other mobile or desktop platform that can run a browser. All you need is a person-to-person network to make the transfer.
How Snapdrop Works?
Snapdrop is a web app that lets you share files across different devices. To access Snapdrop, all you have to do is open the Snapdrop page on both devices. It is also important that they are connected to the same Internet connection. In other words, if you want to transfer a file from your iPhone to your Windows laptop, both devices need to be on the same network connection. Snapdrop needs to connect to a wireless internet network in order to work. It will work on your home wi-fi, in your office, in a Starbucks coffee shop, you name it!
You will see a white screen with a blue Wi-Fi signal-like icon and concentric circles radiating from it after opening Snapdrop in your browser on both devices. The interface is very simple and doesn’t require any setup, which is honestly one of the best things about it. You can open the Web app on your devices using any browser (Safari and Chrome worked well).
Each device will show the other devices on its display once you’ve opened the web page on all devices. You can tap on the device icon, select the file you want to send from your device, and send it after your device appears on the web page (and it appears instantly). It’s only natural to wonder how secure this Web app is. Well, Snapdrop is an open-source platform, and the developers claim that anything shared only gets transmitted between two devices, and no data is ever shared with a server or cloud.Further, the web application does not use cookies, and since there is no sign-up process, there is essentially no database. And if you ever have any doubts, the developers have provided a link to their server. The Snapdrop platform uses WebRTC to share files, so all files encrypt. This makes Snapdrop a highly secure platform.

However, it has a few limitations. Because this is a Web application, you need to have a steady Internet connection in order to use it. Using Snapdrop, you can also share files between two devices, but they must both connect to the same Internet.As a result, it is very proximate and limiting in terms of distance; some would say it also requires Wi-Fi, but if youdo not have one, you can set your phone to hotspot mode and create one for a short duration!
Another possible issue (although the chances are slim) is that if multiple people using the web app in the same building whilst logged in to the same Wi-Fi network (like in a cafe or office), there might be some confusion since a number of devices are logged in at the same time. There is no obvious way to name devices (another shortcoming of sorts, although some claim they’ve been able to do this).
Additionally, transfer speeds can be erratic – sometimes files go in seconds, sometimes they get stuck. Snapdrop is a pretty amazing Web application all in all, thanks to its simplicity and ability to work on any platform. There are no downloads, no logins, nothing The URL is all that require. Just click and share! How cool is that? When we have a file to share with someone close by, this is going to be one of our preferred methods.

Filedrop
The Filedrop app is a pretty straightforward offering that lets you share files over a network with ease. Like AirDrop, the app lets you share a file or multiple files with just a few taps. After choosing the device you wish to share files with, you can select the files from the integrated file manager. Filedrop’s interface outdate, but for the most part, it’s usable. Similar to our other picks, the service is free and there’s no limit to the size of files you can share.
Zapya
Zapya is a file sharing app that’s available on all platforms and even the web, making it an excellent AirDrop alternative. Through the free app (which includes advertisements). You can share all types of files over the same network from your phone to PC or PC to phone.
Furthermore, it is pretty fast (the makers claim it is 200 times faster than Bluetooth) and there are no file size restrictions. Although it’s not as simple as Snapdrop or even Instashare, Zapya still works well. You might wonder why it’s better than Xender or SHAREit, well. Zapya offers a Windows client and a web client, respectively, that neither of the other apps offer.
NitroShare
NitroShare is an open-source, cross-platform network that allows you to transfer files across Windows, macOS, and Linux devices. Being an open-source and cross-platform network, it is an ideal alternative to AirDrop for Windows. NitroShare detects other NitroShare devices on the local network using broadcast technology. Although the sharing process is not as seamless as AirDrop, it feels fast and convenient. As for the interface, the file transfer looks clean and is quite lightweight. NitriShare uses both fast hardware and fast networks to accelerate file sharing. Security-wise, NitroShare consider secure and does not sell your data. Overall, NitroShare covers all of the bases to be a viable AirDrop replacement.
Cloud Storage Services
Various cloud storage services now enable you to share files between your phone and your computer with ease. For instance, Dropbox,Tetily, OneDrive, Google Drive or any other cloud service you use on your phone and Windows PC can be used to share files. You just need to upload files to your cloud storage and your files will be available on any other device. I understand that these services aren’t strictly AirDrop alternatives. But they are still worth mentioning here since they serve as a convenient file transfer service.
